Winning the World Cup brings you fame and glory ... and also money.

While prize money has been awarded throughout the men's World Cup for years, the Women's World Cup didn't start handing out prize money until the 2007 edition, when Germany went home with $1 million after winning. Not to mention the sum of prize money is significantly less than the amount awarded at the men's World Cup.

The total amount of prize money has increased with each of the last three Women's World Cups, but not by much.

Here's a breakdown for the total prize money at the 2019 Women's World Cup, how much the winners will take home and how that all pales in comparison to their male counterparts, which has become a significant point of contention around the world.

Women's World Cup prize money: How much do the winners make in 2019?

  • Total prize purse: $30 million
  • Winner's share: $4 million

Back in October, FIFA announced the total amount of prize money the 24 teams in the 2019 Women's World Cup would be competing for will be $30 million, with the winner of the tournament taking home $4 million. The amount of money FIFA awards for the Women's World Cup pales in comparison to what it awards the teams in the men's World Cup.

For the 2018 World Cup in Russia, $400 million in prize money was handed out to the 32 teams who competed, including $38 million to the winning country, France. Compare that to the money handed out at this year's Women's World Cup and the numbers are staggering.

World Cup prize money: Men vs. women

World Cup year Total purse Winner's prize money
2018 (men) $400 million $38 million
2019 (women) $30 million $4 million

The total prize money the women will see at the World Cup this year is just 7.5 percent of what the men saw in 2018, and the amount of money the eventual winner will see will be just 10.5 percent of what France took home in 2018. The $38 million France took home in '18 is more than all the prize money that will be awarded at the 2019 Women's World Cup combined.

Women's World Cup payouts, purse by year

At the 2010 World Cup, champion Spain walked away with $30 million while 2011 Women's World Cup winner Japan won just $1 million. The 2015 Women's World Cup saw an increase in prize money, as the United States took home $2 million after winning. But it still didn't match the $35 million taken home by champion Germany during the 2014 World Cup.

World Cup year Total purse Winner's share
2007 $5.8 million $1 million
2011 $5.8 million $1 million
2015 $15 million $2 million
2019 $30 million $4 million
